Louise-Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun was one of the most prominent French portrait painters of the late 1700s, creating over 800 paintings. Jeanne Du Barry must have liked this portrait since she commissioned two versions of it: one for each of her lovers. https://t.co/3XfuF34A0o

« Le XVIIIe siècle est le parent pauvre de la peinture française » est une absurdité quand François Boucher, Noël Nicolas-Coypel, Antoine Watteau, Jacques Louis David, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Hubert Robert ou encore François Lemoyne ont brillé de part leur talent.

I love Vigée Le Brun's 1798 portrait of Maria Grigorievna Viazemskaïa, Princess Golitsyna. The Princess' unhappy first marriage to Prince Golitsyn came to a dramatic end in 1802 when Count Leo Razumovsky won her from her husband in a card game, after which she married him instead

Vigée Le Brun's portrait of Marie Antoinette's friend Blanche Charlotte Marie Félicité de Narbonne-Pelet, Maréchale-Comtesse de Mailly is so pretty. The Comtesse's husband was guillotined in 1794 and she very nearly shared his fate but was saved by the fall of Robespierre.

J'adore the attention to detail (the music!) and the gorgeous eye catching crimson used by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun in her sumptuous 1785 portrait of Bonne Marie Joséphine Gabrielle Bernard de Boulainvilliers, Baronne de Crussol Florensac.

This delightful 1789 portrait by Vigée Le Brun is of Adélaïde Harenc de Praël, Madame Perregaux (1759-1794). Madame Perregaux was the illegitimate daughter of a dancer at the Comédie Française and the banker Nicolas Beaujon, who was one of the richest men in France.

There's something so likeable about Vigée Le Brun's portrait of the celebrated Madame Dugazon in her most famous role. Dugazon caused a riot at the opera in 1792 by singing 'Ah, how I love my mistress' to Marie Antoinette - a courageous move that temporarily ended her career.

Germaine de Staël, who was born on this day in 1766, hated her portrait by Vigée Le Brun so much that she promptly commissioned another more flattering one from Firmin Massot. It depicts her as Corinne, the heroine of her eponymous 1805 novel.
