Marianne von Werefkin
The Yellow Bush
1925
Marianne von Werefkin: “I love what doesn't exist. I love love that doesn't exist, which extends above you like an invisible city, like uncapturable smoke, a love that evokes a longing for enchanted lands, 1/2
🖌 Werefkin
Werefkin moved to live at Lake Maggiore & founded the Great Bear group in 1924. Ave Maria (1927), Country Road (1920), Klostergarten (c1926) & Big Moon (1923)
The Chandler (1909), The Dancer (1909), Styx (1910s) & In the Theatre (1906). It’s notable that von Werefkin was interested in documenting village life & had a darker & more moody palette than her associates
She painted again in 1906 & became an expressionist by 1907. She explored different influences in her work. The couple painted with Münter & Kandinsky in Murnau. Portrait of Werefkin by von Jawlensky (1906), Münter’s Portrait of her (1909), At the Fountain (1908) & Twins (1909)
Von Werefkin was born into a well-to-do Russian family & studied under Ilya Repin (1880). She hurt her hand in a hunting accident but managed to recover its use. Vera Repin (1881), Portrait of a Girl (1883), Self-portrait (1883) & Repin’s Portrait of von Werefkin (1888)
Thread: Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938) was a key member of the German expressionist movement & is only now being recognised for her genius. Dancer (1909), Moonshine (1907) & Windblown (1910). Her work is exciting & enjoyable
