1877年のこの日、西郷隆盛が鹿児島の城山で自ら命を絶った。明治維新のリーダーの一人で、廃藩置県など大きな改革の実現に尽力した。征韓論で新政府と対立、帰郷して私学校を開設したが、士族に擁立されて西南戦争へ。約半年の戦いに敗れ自刃した。
