To start things off, the inspiration for Clover, when redesigning him at least, was from a bunch of those "Kool and edgy video game mascots" from the '90s. As for his design, it was partially inspired by NiGHTS. This is also the reason why he's not a human being.
heads up that Flashback is currently $1 (one dollar) in the Switch eShop. this was one of my absolute favorite games of the 90s. from the Out Of This World / Another World creator and very similar, but more of an 80s sci-fi homage (Total Recall, Blade Runner, Running Man)

@TripleKyun Well, it was going to happen in the 90s. Popful Mail was going to be localized as "Sister Sonic," but that was dropped in favor of bringing in the actual game. It's unknown what Sister Sonic would have looked like. The pic on the right is fan art.
