As he points out, the Maeda storyboards -- which despite all the aesthetic differences do follow the final Q quite closely in many (sometimes rather revealing) ways -- dispense with the purple-red blockade altogether and JUST give us an ATF that 13 and 09 need to break thru!

Re: mysterious & vague
I don't expect every single plot point to have a detailed backstory. "13 was made to breach it" doesn't rub me the wrong way. If you can see a way for it to matter, more power to you.
