Just compare the line thickness of the left one to the right one.
One has clear outlines, one very thin lines all over the place. This makes it very difficult to parse visually. The fact that the background pops as much as the foreground doesn't help either.

More great use of space to pace the last scene, too. You're drawn to Rei's condition in the foreground, then Shinji's dawning realization in the background.
