I'm guessing the 1st part of Earthrealm in Konquest (Shujinko's Village) is Japan; based off the lanterns, the foliage, earthy colors & buildings. Also Shujinko is Japanese for "Protagonist". The 2nd part I'm assuming is China, based on pagodas & the Lin Kuei base.

I like looking at references because it helps me memorize the shapes and patterns of a thingy I want to draw. Hell, for some drawings I use myself as a reference!
Example: for these two drawings, I had somebody take a picture of me in the poses you see below. I learned a lot.
