Metal is abandoned in Stardust Speedway. Eggman builds Robo as a clunky replacement, improves it to Mecha, and it gets destroyed by Knuckles. Eggman retrieves Metal in 4/Mania.

To clear up some misconceptions, Knuckles is officially 16 years old according to his bio page on Sonic Channel (so no, we didn't "make it up"). His Sonic Jam profile used to cite him as 15 years old.

The only thing that is 27 is Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles' debut game.
