I don’t think they’re inherently cutesy nor that cartoony precludes a saccarine aesthetic. Sonic is a very anime brand and coolness was the core. Cool lead the designs of Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and games like Sonic Rush. The OVA and CD OP, too.

I always just think back to that comment Ikuhara made in the CCA book where he said something like having the cartoony YAS designs mixed with the darker narratives made it a more memorable experience.
