I Tone it out normally first, then convert the flat tones to halftone using the bitmap method, but I lose a lot of contrast doing that, so just as you said I cheat the different shades after the fact to punch it up a little.

Marvel (Marvelle?) is a prime example of why I think First Departure R is a half step for design corrections from First Departure. The outfit was restored and modernized, but you lose all the muted colors, like the red eyes and grayish-blue hair, which removes a lot of contrast..

I usually put some colours I think I want and then add some that I think they work together. Then I hear that my colours are not vivid enough and I use contrast tool to improve it.
