One of the most clear examples was in the very first season with WarGreymon and Metal Garurumon. In fact, it wasn't supposed to have Ultimate Evoltuions in the series. As it had low budget, the end should have been with the Perfect Evolution and nothing more.

Day 4 - Favorite Champion digimon - Devidramon. When I first saw it in the anime my child mind was absolutely blown that something cooler than Garurumon existed, I had been sure that was the pinnacle of cool until I saw Devidramon hah. Good times.
