105 years ago today the composer, folk song collector and morris dancer was killed on the Somme. He was buried by his comrades, but his grave was later lost. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

31 July 1917. The 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in WW1 began in Belgium as British forces attacked the German Army. The assault was spearheaded by the British commander in chief, Sir Douglas Haig. After 3 months of bloody combat, British and Canadian troops gained victory.

I N S P I R A T I O N

I discovered the story of Leonard Wattelet when visiting the ’s Flanders Fields cemetery. His story inspired both a piece of art and further research into his 91st Division. This, in turn, inspired my piece SHOOTING THE BREEZE.
