I think the key is providing the reader with a compelling reason WHY your protagonist is originally evil. You have to somehow make them likable from the start, despite their actions, and have the audience root for their transition from monster to hero.

Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts is the best animated show I've seen since Avatar The Last Air Bender. Fantastic stories, imaginative world/creatures, great character designs with likable personalities. A soundtrack I need a playlist for ASAP. Watch it the moment you can folks!
