A strategy for making backgrounds that I sometimes use is blocking out the shapes, which you already have, and adding lines all over the background. I used the strategy when illustrating Rushmore and the asteroids in the images below. It keeps your detailed background, and helps-

Background. It really hurts my eyes because :

1) Plain light colour like light blue or light orange but orange is warm colour. It's comfortable.

2) Nothing. No clouds, No sky shading and no other objects like coconut trees.

I've got a few but my main ampwave is Sonic Boom, the blue one. The purple on is Ambience and the white one is Static. I have a few more planned. Sonic Boom loves heavy bass and being the life of the party while Ambience loves smooth jazz and fading into the background.
