A3 With photo references, you have to use a perspective grid to add/change the background details, or else they'll really stick out as wrong.

With something less detailed/elaborate, you can get away with eyeballing it.

Yoshitoshi Abe. He's more of a chara-designer/artistic director in the anime industry than a mangaka but I love his illustrations. Backgrounds are full of details, characters are somehow unsettling and colors look dirty and heavy. He's got a style on his own.
