I've been experimenting with painting the tones on these in greyscale and then converting it with a gradient map to the purple range I usually shade with, placing flats underneath. might be a good way to switch to or drop color mid-project.

recently i've been exploring using gradient maps to supply evocative color without actually getting down and dirty in the color mines. on the left is how the page looks with a gradient map, and on the right is how it's "really" colored with the gradient turned off:

5 or less colors with larger markings or simple gradients. Like large splotches instead of stripes and spots if that makes sense. Just very easy to recreate markings so flat colors alone don’t take more time than shading. (Using my sona as an example, art by peaceskyy.)

Start with a one, two, or three color fill on a separate layer from ur lineart. I do all of this on a new canvas to be safe, all color layers merged, lineart separate. Use Gaussian blur to create a gradient and then clip it to the merged color layer.
