I honestly think the reason fan art gets more attention is that people are more familiar with the subject than original art ideas. If I did a piece of something related, it'll get more attention than my original characters, thus getting an interest from Disney.

My favorite part of the picture was the huge, exaggerated lava wave. I've searched up pictures of lava animation from Disney. The perfect reference I found was the Firebird from Fantasia 2000 and the cave escape scene from Aladdin! And pictures of solar flares are also beautiful.
