I certainly wouldn't call this a full on 'improvement' for such a wide gap. But I am glad to see how my overall shading styles have evolved.

They're certainly the most iconic and characteristic of the original trilogy. CE's has charm as an Aliens knock off but 3's retain some visual continuity with 2 while having more exadurated proportions and unique shapes.

My ideal would be a blend of 2 and 3's concepts

That's not proof of erasure at all. The Darkhold looks different even in different comic books. It was once a scroll! It's magical, so the fact that it looks different isn't surprising. And if they wanted to "erase" AoS, they certainly wouldn't include very deliberate easter eggs
