it's meant to look like this at first. It's a construction robot. The neck is a flexible spine that lets it crawl around and have flexibility when carrying huge objects.
But then it mutates and the neck just keeps growing until theres nothing else left of its body.

Read Providence by Alan Moore and (no relation-probably). While it was beautifully illustrated the story left me a bit flat. All the Lovecraft deconstruction you could want, but with an overstory that just wasn't engaging enough. It seemed to wander around too much.

A reconstruction of a Highland gentleman warrior of the 1680s. A lot more dandy than the popular imagination allows. Note the quality of his musket, and that it lacks a trigger guard. Scots gunsmiths were skilled and had an aversion to trigger guards apparently!
