On April 20, 1775, Israel Putnam, while plowing one of his fields on his farm in Connecticut, received news of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. He immediately left to ride the 100 miles to Cambridge, MA. He arrived the next day and offered his services to the patriot cause.

John Rennie's Southwark Bridge opened 1819. Originally called Queen Street bridge, the centre span was said to be the longest cast iron span ever built, at 240ft (73m). It was replaced in 1921 as it was too narrow to cope with the growing traffic.
