The second inspiration for this design is Goya's depiction of the Coco! Goya is probably my favorite artist ever, and I love to pay homage to his work in small ways.

I find Otto Dix's depiction of war in "Der Krieg" astounding. While in classical paintings, war often depicted as bravery and glory, during the 20th century (especially in Dix's art) the depiction of war shifts from glory and heroism to tragedy, terror and disaster.

Here’s a poster of Den by Richard Corben that Warren used to advertise as a depiction of our hero as “the savage paragon of the carnal combat” or some such, along with the cover of the forthcoming Den reprint/restoration. The difference between the two images is quite remarkable.
