Revisiting the first episode of Static Shock this morning and, all told, it's a solid debut for the series. The character work and subject matter, especially for Virgil, really hits hard, the gags work and the cliffhanger is aces.

Let's talk about Smile! Pretty Cure! In that season, it's mostly focused on physical gags/comedy. Complicated dressy designs found in a season like Princess wouldn't help with the simple tone. So instead, each design is more uniform in nature like with Yes5 but simplified.

Have I mentioned that I love this comic? The callbacks and running gags are fantastic. Here we have Mark fleeing from Martians, not once, but twice. The comedy in these two scenes always felt very cinematic to me, what with the sudden cutaway to next page.
