Raymond Briggs, When The Wind Blows...

R.I.P. Raymond Briggs (1934-2022), a master of the graphic novel for the past half-century, whose blend of mirth and melancholy elevated his stories far beyond kids' stuff.

Don't just read his tragicomic tale of nuclear war, 'When the Wind Blows' (1982); read all his books!

Of course this blows up. I sorta expected it, but at the same time it somehow still shocks me. Weird ain't it?

I would do the obligatory "check out my art" tweet, but come on...
I know most of yall hate my original stuff. So why try? Small attention's better for it anyway.

The Snowman still makes me blubber every year when I watch it, and When The Wind Blows traumatised me when they wheeled the TV and the video player in to show it to us in primary school. 'Cause y'know, it's a cartoon and we were kids, right? Thank you, Mr. Raymond Briggs. (K)

RIP Raymond Briggs. He delighted kids with Fungus the Bogeyman and The Snowman, and terrified adults with When the Wind Blows and The Tin Pot Foreign General. And he always did so with a rare genius. One of our greatest cartoonists.

Whether the brutal undoing that is When the Wind Blows or the perfect dream of childhood that is The Snowman, he was a massive inspiration and he'll be missed by so many.
Rest in peace, Raymond Briggs x

so sad to read of his passing. His works, so many of them, especially Fungus the Bogeyman, When the Wind Blows, and of course The Snowman were as important to this boy as works by or any other author. His legacy is a wonderful one. Thank you x

Alongside When the Wind Blows, other deeply resonant books such as Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman or Gentleman Jim are definitely worth a read. Not for young children... https://t.co/maVfoCQsgg

RIP Raymond Briggs, whose impact - on comics, on children who read comics - simply cannot be understated. When the Wind Blows terrified me as a child, and does to the same degree today. I can’t think of any other work that can say the same.

So sad to hear of the loss of Raymond Briggs. A children’s author who truly understood children and was unafraid to be honest.

“When the Wind Blows” will forever live with me in its stark honesty and power.

RIP Raymond Briggs, these books were a huge part of my childhood, even his incredibly dark When The Wind Blows...!

So sorry to hear that Raymond Briggs has died. Such a marvellous talent in creating comics. I was particularly moved by how he recorded the voices and mannerisms of the older generations, in ‘When the Wind Blows’ and ‘Ethel & Ernest’, about his parents. https://t.co/WpSIQYKMT6

Awful awful news. Briggs was really one of the best storytellers we had. When the Wind Blows, Fungus the Bogeyman, The Snowman, just masterpiece after masterpiece. https://t.co/edCPzYGszp
