Something has always bothered me about this image. We see his neck going into his helmet but how in the heck is his head supposed to fit in there? His head would have to be tiny.

For a 40x40 directional brush, you'd want a 120x120 image. These options can be combined to make an animated directional brush, like "kuroneko" (black cat) or the squirrel. (The cat has two frames, the squirrel has three.)
