why does the Parallels Desktop icon look like they designed it with zero awareness of the existence of any other programs or even general basic icon design principles

An artists rate is also comprised of: cost of living, rent, materials/programs used, licensing original work, personal food/medical costs, time and education spent to get to their skill, etc. Artists work and deserve their set rate!
@lurioosi @BenOakleyAuthor Art is a trade and requires education and dedication to get to higher skill levels. Artists spend time learning, practicing, honing skills, money on licensing images and fonts and on programs and materials. They deserve to be paid for their work. There’s art for every budget.
