Finally got this done. Man, this was fun. Tried to emulate 's angular lines and piercing colors to a point, but still kept it relatively soft. Pretty pleased with it.

Starting to get somewhere. A metasprite or "frame" is a collection of hardware sprites, each with a relative offset from their drawn location / pivot, as well as tile and attribute. Made a routine to draw a metasprite w/clipping, and here you can see it drawing 16 metasprites.
