In 1856 William Henry Perkin (1838–1907) tried to make quinine from coal tar & discovered it could be used to create purple dye. He called it mauveine. Fabric dyed with it didn't fade from sunlight & coal pollution; 'royal purple' clothing became more affordable

I'm glad I can watch both of these species near home. Ringed plover often nests at coal mine ponds and redshank rarely nests in wetlands.
