1 ) sketching a general idea
2 ) refine in black and white everything
3 ) use the tone curve tool to give color
4 ) refine a lot, and remember to not rely on the already given colors too much and something of your own >:)

Then I make a layer under lines but over color. Fill with a mid tone. I like purple. On this layer, block in the shading. Push the lights and darks, set to multiply, adjust the colors if you want.
