I really love when artists use textured brushes for sketchy lineart

Add details like minor lineart shading, making the ear outline based on a letter, giving the character eyelashes etc

I paint my shadows very lightly, I generally lower the opacity of the layer to have something softer. Once you are done, add a new layer on top the other one. Same settings except for the opacity. Draw more dark shadows to add depth. I usually do this thrice.
