IDW is very specific about its lore. Transformers are a species of genderless robots. Any Transfomer that is a 'she' has had their frame physically altered to look female. It's canon. (Also Cyberverse Acidstorm changes frametypes, so it's in a cartoon too)

Probably best explained in Lost Light but it's prominent in all the IDW comics - all the female Transformers had to have their frames changed since Transformers were originally genderless (doy, they're robots).
