2011 - DARK SOULS
This is one of my favorite games of all time, and PROBABLY not for the reasons you think. Playing this game took me back to my childhood of playing strictly NES games, this game gave me that sense of exploration and wonder I had been missing for so long.
@Sophia_Nyx If you had to make me choose, this is the game I most come back to play on the NES. Plus, given the NES's hardware limitations, this game pushing the console to its limits and still manages to be an awesome game.
Lawrence Fletcher also worked on a few unreleased NES games that were meant to be published by Vic Tokai in the US:
Mariner's run
Dweebers
Secret Ties
Shogun Maeda
25 years after the NES original, Majesco attempted to reboot David Crane’s A BOY AND HIS BLOB for the Nintendo DS. It never came out due to quality concerns.

1989 - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
This is peak classic Castlevania. Castlevania I was great, Castlevania II was experimental and cryptic, but this one just hit the nail just right. Such a sick NES game.
ground man evolution
from absolute nightmare to something you could actually see on an NES
Lol in the poll I said I couldn’t fit the NES one even if I did. Thats because I was gonna set Super and Samus Returns separate until I figured that they look almost the same. 😅
A 2019 illustration depicting Ninja Gaiden II's (NES) ending, featuring Ryu Hayabusa and Irene Lew.
The second image is a comedic spin-off of that ending with Ryu... fainting?dying? due to blood loss XD.

Samus won the poll for August, but I wanted to do something a little different, harkening back to the green haired edition seen on the NES.
And no pants.

Noah from... Bible Adventures from memory. Listen, was this game a weird cash grab/ propoganda piece for Christian conservatives? Yes. Was it mostly very bad? Yes. Was the Noah's ark game, actually kinda fun? Also yes.

@DarkerJenny_ @PenScribbleDX Ehh, I think what OP was trying to say is not that NES isn't capable of good graphic but more of how most mockup brushes off the period devs didn't know how to optimize their graphic. Hence the SMB1 palette. SMB3 had pretty decent looking sprites too but was not the point.
Lucio just has a really nice color scheme, honestly, and is yet another variant of that classic NES Warrior design. He looks a bit like a white-haired Sumo/Duke or Oersted, plus a cape.
1987: I would have guessed this came out later since my best friend in elementary school had this and he had later NES games, but his dad was a big hockey guy and YOU COULD FIGHT
Made some pixel art for @ChieAria in regular and really bad nes sprite
2014 - Shovel Knight.
2D NES style platformer that does a excellent job at being fun and charming. highly recommend for anyone tbh.
1988: Super Mario Bros. 3
What the best Mario game is is debated (I think it's Super Mario Land 2, but that's 1992 and it is NOT touching Star Control 2), but SMB3 is really up there for me. A great way to lead into the NES' waning years, it's oustanding and fun to this day.
