@WhyDoWeBelieve @FolkloreThurs There's more! Undine was a popular tale in the 19th century. An early German romance, oft rewritten and illustrated, the fairy-tale novella by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué tells of Undine, a water spirit, who marries a the knight Huldebrand so as to gain a soul. (Arthur Rackham).
My Dutch mother gave me a treasured a copy of Hans Andersen c1915. Dutch illustrator, Rie Cramer was influenced by Beardsley, Rackham & Dulac & had a distinct Art Nouveau style. I love this poignantly naked Little Mermaid once she'd lost her tail. #FolkloreThursday
For #ShakespeareSunday Arthur Rackham's illustrations for "The Tempest," which he illustrated in 1926.
The dullest people are always the one who want facts & proof or information over imagination. It is no wonder that they cannot believe in Faerie, or magic, or anything that is truly important such as portals to other realms.
(art by Arthur Rackham)
Lizzie and Laura, in Rossetti's "Goblin Market," escape, if only just, in a poem with definite allusions to Persephone and Hades. Although the fruit seems to have trapped her in a state of wanting & wasting rather than a place like Hades/Faerie. Famously illustrated by #Rackham.
Just completed reading this Excellent informative Book on Illustrator (The Gobin Master) Arthur Rackham.
Strongly recommended.
This morning I maybe at work physically but mentally I am living in the magical world of Arthur Rackham. Care to join me?
FAIRIES BEHAVING BADLY Armed fey are seen warring with 'rere-mice' for their 'leathern wings', killing caterpillars as 'canker' & spearing a 'red hipped humble bee' in A Midsummer Night's Dream illustrated #ArthurRackham 1908. Hey fairies leave those bees alone! #FolkoreWords
