You're mixing up Character Design and Art Style. Characters can be recognizable without sticking to the original. IE: Sonic

Blaze was just moral support in games like Colors DS and Generations (and TSR, and more). ALL characters have been reduced to that.

Basically, in sonic forces when the chaos clone was about to attack tails, classic never showed up to save him. Chaos killed the fox and uses his body as a vessel. His goal is to become perfect chaos again and stop all that stop him from reaching that.
