this is a giant deep sea isopod, or bathynomus giganteus
this specimen is just over fifteen inches long and is an excellent example of deep sea gigantism, especially with its large compound eyes

@RayDHeart It really is!!! And its a super fun challenge to see how to anthropomorphize certain features and make everything work! These two are both isopod characters ive designed before, trying to go for a simpler toony look. I still like them but the new one is by far my fave!

So "tongue-eating isopods" eat & replace fish tongues, right? This has bothered me, bc fish have bony tongues (unlike mammalian muscular tongues), so how is this possible? My @HowardU student Briana Washington analyzed a CT scan of a parasitized jack & found the tongue intact!
