Start with a big base colour gradient, base colour the body (that way the bg colour shows through too), basic shading, then go in detail with the eyes, face and hands (that's where the eyes are normally drawn to), then finally do whatever you want.

Gradients always look darker than colors.
This is official artwork from the manga.

Gotta draw myself a new avatar every time I change my hair, but you'll always know it's me if there's a gradient in the background and I'm touching my face.

Recently finished the main storyline of RF3! Guess which bachelorette I chose XD

I tried a lot of lighting stuff, experimenting with filters, gradient and different brushes, it was really fun trying out new stuff for this piece. Hope it looks decent!

Managed to finish my second attack offstream. This was an enjoyable piece! The gradient on those wing feathers was so fun to work with.

My part of an art trade with @ rainb0t on Instagram!

This is her original character, Quinn. I really like her outfit and purple hair, so gradients were a must.

(By the way, this was made completely using vectors! It's a lot of work, but the resulting style is worth it!)

Light also works best when you don't overdo it. think what way the light is moving and use a single or as few as possible brush strokes to create the light. Use an eraser or mask to define it more. Light is also a gradient more often than not.

Before applying the gradient, you should also consider whether light or dark will be the focal point. In many cases, if you want something bright to the the focal point, give the background a dark gradient, if the focal point is something dark, make it light.
