Today in 1791, the #Haitians launched a slave revolt against France. They won, but then France extorted them for an "independence debt" that was worth US$105 billion. It took 122 years to pay it. US Marines also occupied Haiti for 19 years, killing thousands with forced labour.
#OtD 21 Aug 1791 the Haitian revolution began as 100,000 enslaved people rose up and eventually overthrew both slavery and French rule, creating the world's first Black republic.
