If Far Side is a modern comic, Heathcliff is anti-modern. I'd call it postmodern if "mythopoetic", "spiritual", or "hermeneutical" didn't feel like a better fit.
The birds here are simply... describing the world. More than that, describing a habitual fact about it.
Even "punchliney" Heathcliff strips tend to be like this: referencing a bizarre part of the world of Heathcliff. It's almost hermeneutical in this way-- a text more like an oral tradition than a written comic in the way it cares about itself.
Heathcliff is only sort of like this.
