while never fully in tune with his work. it has always been recognizable. and very close aesthetically to something I would have loved

As a barely-cognizant kid, one of my earliest anime memories was the rotating asteroid defense from the Space Cruiser Yamato movie, the 1978 internationally-released version of SBY, which I saw w/my parents in a crowded theater.

I've heard the news. Leiji Matsumoto sadly passed away. Without his work on Danguard Ace, Gunbuster wouldn't have existed. Without him, Kazuhiko Shimamoto wouldn't have given us immortal characters like Domon and Master Asia based on Leiji's works.
