In the 80s I read an Omni Magazine news blurb that scientists cloned a Wholly Mammoth from a frozen specimen found in Siberia. Later they revealed the blurb was an April Fools joke. I tho't of that as I read a recent Twitter thread abt Mammoth Meat balls being created in the lab.

Sarkastodon was a large meat-eating mammal from the middle Eocene, 40 million years ago. At 3m long and weighing possibly up to 800kg it would have been around the size of a very large polar bear! It wasn’t closely related to any mammal alive today.
