Flowers with Two Lizards is a 1603 painting by Roelant Savery, now in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. It and a near-identical version by the same artist are the two earliest surviving floral still lifes from the Northern Netherlands.

The dodo is an iconic specimen @morethanadodo, but it is believed that Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland,' was actually inspired by Jan Savery's 1651 painting of the infamous extinct species displayed in the Museum

Landscape with Birds (including a Dodo), 1628.
Super-early flower still life painted 1603 by Roelant Savery, before everybody else was doing flowers. Gorgeous! Also A+ lizards & bugs. Today is his day.
This trompe l'oeil style painting is Roelant Savery's "Vase of Flowers in a Stone Niche", 1615.
It teems with lively little creatures that look as if they might crawl right out.
This is also a beautiful example of artists SIGNING and DATING their work! No guessing required! 🎨
Cow shed, 1615, with nice dog in foreground but, er, witches lurking in all the corners. Help me out with this, Roelant Savery! Was this when you started drinking heavily?
February 25, 1639: Flemish painter Roelant Savery dies.
Savery was apprenticed to his elder brother Jacob, who was also a painter.
After his brother's death, Roelant became court painter to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (and his successor, Matthias).

2/2 Some fine lizards there, crawling around the signature of Roelant Savery.
Flowers in stone niche, w/ some lizards & insects. Vanitas stone is cracking, flowers will die -- but not these ones, painted in 1615 by Roelant Savery! Today is his day.
2/2 A whole landscape filled with birds, including a dodo, painted in 1628 by Roelant Savery. Memorialist of dodo's. It's his day.

I was at South Kensington site @NHM_London today and had unexpected opportunity to have a closer look at Roelant Savery’s painting of the Dodo. Painted c. 1626 It struck me that it will soon be 400 years old. We have lost so many more species in the intervening four centuries
