Rest in peace, Gene Deitch. Thank you for bringing your beautiful comics, animations, and stories to the world.
Gene Deitch will always be the guy who did those weird-looking Tom and Jerry and Popeye shorts. He was an Oscar-winning master of modernist Atomic Age cartoons at UPA and Terrytoons that many animators are inspired by. He'll be missed by tons of animation fans.
and whom Jerry Beck attempted to revive for a Nickelodeon short but was legally unable to, leading to his creation of a legally distinct character named Hornswiggle). Deitch also created Tom Terrific for Captain Kangaroo (CBS owned Terrytoons at the time).
Rare character designs by Jiří Trnka for The Hobbit (1966), dir. Gene Deitch
Trnka's version of The Hobbit was sadly never finished, due to budget problems and Trnka's death, but Deitch continued with Czech illustrator Adolf Born to release a smaller-scale adaptation in 1966
@TVsKyle Also a fan of stylized animation style from the 1950s and 60s. Jay Ward, Deitch-era Terrytoons, etc!
