Girl's fashion was inspired by the Aesthetic movement, especially the drawings of Kate Greenaway. The dresses were loose and high-waisted so children could move freely. Smocking (gathering in the form of pleats) was popular as it was associated with innocence. So pretty! 😍
I'm not sure if Kate Greenaway wants us to think this little fella is getting ready to jump off the fence...or if it's just been THAT week!

English illustrator Cicely Mary Barker, who is best known for her depictions of fairies & flowers, was born #OTD in 1895. Kate Greenaway and the Pre Raphaelites (John Everett Millais & Edward Burne-Jones in particular) were huge influences on her style.
In Wales, changelings were known as crimbals. One story is of Dazzy Walters in Ebbw Vale who woke up just as her baby was being stolen, but managed to hold onto its foot before the fairies disappeared with it. 🧚🏼♀️

In 1884, Kate Greenaway published “Language of Flowers.” In it she deftly explored & drew floral lore: from a daisy’s innocence to the sense of virtue in a garland of roses. Her art pointed to the Georgian era, but she also hinted at life’s hardships. 🌷#MythologyMonday

Victorian writer & illustrator Kate Greenaway was born #OTD in 1846. As a girl she was described as an "odd child" because she spent so much time in her imagination. Her imagination would be her greatest asset in her illustrations. Her book Under the Window became a bestseller.
