We have examples of more masculine women in fiction, such as Samus; we also have examples of pretty, but chubby/fat women in fiction (whether fat from lifestyle or just heavier in build, the latter is shown in my OC Ruki). These things can be done tastefully.

What they were going for could have been achieved far better. It is very possible to make heavy-set or even masculine-looking women visually appealing (see examples). What they're doing is dragging a well-loved character's design through the mud for popularity points. It's sad.
