Yeah you got it right, I turned off the built in shading and painted it in myself.
And for the rimlight, I left it on on purpuse to emulate the look in the reference picture. (in the sheet the rimlight looks grey but in the final model is blue like in this picture)
also the lighting/compositing is fantastic... they do the "cartoon movie" shadows on everything but they also do like incredibly subtle and nice things with ambient lighting and rimlights and stuff? honestly kind of shocking to see outside of a Makoto Shinkai film or something
Backlight/Rimlight experiment complete and successful. CMYK didn't murder the colors so I'm definitely having him printed.
