A reason that soft shading is usually more expensive is because it takes longer to render the shading than cell shading or flat color! You have to not only apply the shade but make sure it moves with the curvature or the surface as well as the texture!

Pretty sure I've touched on subject already but if you're an artist please dont be scared to do rendering!!
Just shading a chara and slapping a bg works at times ofc!! But dont be scared to try new things!
Maybe try adding a texture! Some glowing particles? (1/2)
