This is actually called half swording! It's how knights used to fight eachother! They would use the sword like a club to attack the small openings at the joints in a suit of armour!

As for the joints, you can take some creative liberties with him, i just did a real quick over lap on the first and then a plain bend on the second. If you want to get fancy you could go the Rachnera route and have some complex kneecaps(?).
