I’m giggling at how much my Fire Genasi went from derp to badass in this time lapse. Made in @Procreate with the 6B pencil brush for the lines, the Studio Pen & lasso tool for flat crisp lay ins, and the Airbrush for the shading in a layer set to Multiply above the others.
@NewFray You can, though somewhat coarsely. The normal/practical case would be doing it in hBlank time; between scanlines, even though it's a bit freer.
The effect will be subtle & it can be difficult to design a palette set that will look nice for both. Here, i did it to tint the water

Cus he's a cartoonist. The bold lines, colors, iconic silhouette, exaggerated emotion, its a cartoon. It's a weird notion that photo realism is the the goal of all artist. Most cartoonist can do it and choose not to.

For this one, instead of drawing it with lines, I tried to carve shapes out of light and shadow. Might come back to this reference and try other approaches. (I don’t know why, but Photos burnt out the edges of the previous upload.)
Ultimately, the art process is unique to the artist. For some people, Sketching is absolutely necessary! Heck, I still sketch for a lot of my work.
