no idea if this is helpful to anyone else, but this is how I build up curls. (they straightened his hair in reference photo I'm using so I did it with no reference) Random as hell red squiggles to provide a base shape makes it seem natural & it helps to avoid a pattern

In case anyone is curious, this palette comes from swedish painter Anders Zorn. He made super amazing paintings with just these four pigments! I'm always amazed at how much color variation he manages to get! I used practice using this palette in school, it was really helpful.
