While I'm not exactly a fan of IDW Sonic, I'm happy to see it get more variety in writing talents (people like Daniel Barnes and Evan Stanley for instance) than the latter half of Archie's existence did, where it was, like, 95% Ian Flynn or something?

They were published by SEGA, not IDW. The obscure easter eggs were artistic nods to Archie that were snuck in by Ian Flynn & Adam B. Thomas. Fans however misinterpreted them to mean that Sally & B. Rabot were canon. Flynn had to do damage control & clear up that misunderstanding.
