There are of course other ways to engender audience sympathy, like design. Characters that look more human/beautiful or have soft/round shapes are generally more sympathetic than inhuman angular creatures.

I miss when homestuck had such a sharp and angular style with clear silhouettes and a limited color pallet of darks or whites with pops of color that draw your eye to it. I prefer it over the rounder almost cuter style now
